We have reviewed in part 1 of this series, why do we need Data Governance and in my part 2, how to start cataloging the data within the enterprise, how to document the supply chain of data in part 3. We have covered an introduction to Data Quality in part 4. We have discussed policy writing in part 5, and FINALLY, we going to talk about the tools, technologies, and automation that generally included as part of the Data Governance IT scope.

This is probably the most exciting part for a technologist and also where the funding questions and time commitment vis-a-vis other IT priorities are challenged heavily.

So, what are the tools involved, other than doing everything we talked about from Part 1 through Part 5, in an excel?

What do I mean by Tools & Automation? Why are they different?

Data Governance tools present metadata from enterprise data platforms and the enterprise at-large. Automation tools will bring the data together into the tools without users (stewards, IT, business SMEs) manually entering it.

There are generally 5 categories of tools and there are some “swiss-army” knife versions, which can do multiple things in a single platform:
